June 1, 2012

I was fortunate enough to nab the very creative Editor-in-Chief from KentonMagazine.com, Alexander Liang and their Fashion Director, the ever-so-chic Mia Tucker-Williams right after fashion week at the end of February and grill them on what’s hot and what belongs in the fashion dumpster for Spring-Winter 2012.

How to Take Great Photos in a Swimsuit

February 15, 2012

By Madeline Barbour

Since I have covered what to look for in a swimsuit  previously, I thought it might be fun to have fabulous Photographer Madeline Barbour , an experienced photographer and founder of How To Become a Photographer, give you some inside tips of getting a great photo of you in your suit. -SS

We’ve all been there – sitting on a beach in a cover-up or a t-shirt so that no one could see what we look like in a bathing suit. But whoever though that a baggy t-shirt or beach towel made great attire for a photo on the beach? No matter what your shape or size, you CAN take great photos of yourself in a bathing suit. All it takes is a few subtle techniques to show of your best features.

1. Choose a Flattering Bathing Suit – This may seem like a no-brainer, but many women fall into the trap of picking bathing suits that aren’t right for their bodies. Just because you’re not wearing a bikini doesn’t mean that you don’t look sexy! One-piece and tankini suits in solid colors or subtle prints are much more flattering. Look for cute details that accent the features you like and cover up the ones you don’t. If you want to nip in your waist, look for a suit that has ruching around the middle. If you want to cover your thighs, you can get a cute retro-style suit with a low cut that hugs your hips.

2. 45 Degree Angle – This is an easy posing trick that will instantly make you look slimmer. Simply turn your body to a 45 degree angle while keeping your head forward. You might also try turning just your shoulders or your hips for a different look. This trick never fails!

3. Show Off Your Favorite Feature – If you want to get creative with posing, choose poses that shows off your favorite features. If you love your arms, you could put one or both on your hips or behind your head. If your legs are your favorite feature, you could extend them out in front of you and take a photo from the side. You can even play with your hair and let it blow in the beach breeze.

4. Act Natural – While posing can make a picture more fun and interesting, it can look a bit gimmicky if you do too much posing. Try to act natural and pose in ways that feel comfortable to you. Goofy or sensuous expressions can be great as well, as long as they go along with your personality. Don’t be afraid to have a friend or family member snap candid shots of you as well – as long as they have good intentions of making you look great. It’s likely that your beauty will shine through best when you’re being yourself.

5. Be Confident – This is by far the most important tip when it comes to taking great photos, no matter what you’re wearing. If you feel good about yourself and enjoy the moment, you’ll have great pictures.  Remember, you don’t have to be a supermodel to look sexy. Even Marilyn Monroe had curves, so feel proud and show them off!

Outback Bowl Confidential

January 5, 2012

As you know from seeing my packing video and my Michigan State University and University of Georgia football player interview, I spent last week with Outback during Outback Bowl week being given an exclusive inside look into what makes one of my favorite restaurants so amazing.

There are more interviews to come, with John Li, Senior VP of Research and Development, AKA the guy who decides what goes on the menu after making it deliciously awesome, and Becky Maree and Dan Holm of the Outback Social Media team. There will also be more video of my experience on the field. I even… got to interview the fella responsible for inventing the bloomin’ onion. I KNOW!!! Wow, HUH? Stay tuned for that.

But first, here is an inside look at the morning before the game with my co-Social Journo, and Man of Style, Joshua Estrin. I must say he was an absolute treasure to work and play with. I’m still breaking into embarrassingly random and sudden giggle fits.

Oh, and the reason my shoulder looks dislocated is because I’m actually holding up my iPhone video camera with my right arm. I actually have really good posture. LOL

AS ALWAYS… the jewelry I’m wearing in the video can be found right here in my shop.

When Joshua Estrin is NOT attending major sporting events with me he can be found at PopMuncher, writing about the world where entertainment, music, fashion and human behavior collide — He revels in the results, a delicious mix of chaos and mayhem. Wrap this all up in a “look ma’ no braces” package and the “Little Engine that never shoulda’, coulda’, or woulda’” has formed strong friendships with a veritable Who’s Who of celebrities.

What We Did 4 Love

July 28, 2011

Hi there! It’s 7/28, my birthday, and although I’ll be celebrating well into a week, hey, maybe even a month—there is a gift I am giving myself and that is…  *What We Did 4 Love*.  This new wing of Sueanne Shirzay Jewelry is something I have been wanting to do for years and currently features myself and jewelry artists Tina Tang and Beth Lerner. More will be joining. My goal is to have other types of handmade goods on the site other than jewelry.

10% of sales will go to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, whom I have worked with for the past year on other philanthropic jewelry projects. They are an amazing group of people who save lives every single day.

If you are an interested artist, please contact me at sueanneshirzay3@gmail.com and thank you so much for your support as always. Please follow @WhatWe Did4Love on Twitter if you wish.

How about Mother’s WEEK?

April 20, 2011

Ladies and gents, I  was lucky enough to be invited to a Mother’s Day Top Picks event by the Accessories Council in NYC this year. There I was introduced to about a dozen fantastic gifts to present to your Mom in the event that you still want her to speak to you, or better yet, NOT speak to you at all except to tell you that you are fabulous and babysit when you go to Europe for a week to ten days at the drop of a hat.

Here are a few that impressed me the most:

I chatted with at length and loved the adorable beautiful and sweet Pam Fink from Good Charma. The Good Charma Bracelet is a keepsake piece of

good charma

jewelry ideal for any mom. It features genuine turquoise, lapis, red coral and pyrite gemstones with sterling silver and 22k gold vermeil nuggets. They are adorned with really cool heart charms. They can be found at Bloomingdales at a starting price of only $75. What I love most about these is that they are so lightweight and colorful! You can stack them, they look great, and you don’t even know they are there.

Sunglasses! Because of my baby blues, greens, or whatever the heck they are, I wear Sunglasses almost every day. Yes, even when it rains,

Calista by Michael Kors

You should too! Cuts down on the Botox. : ) Note: Hell, no, I don’t use Botox. Here is a great “No autographs, please” look by the chic Michael Kors. The Michael Kors collection launched a glamourous range of sunglasses named Calista. They actually come in two sizes, to better flatter your face. Whether your Mom is Edgy or a bit more understated, both shapes will work .  Retailing at only $200 these are an absolute must with summer just around the corner.

Another gorgeous and charismatic gal, Maria Brito has made it her mission in life to help New Yorkers and visitors alike  love where they live.  She loves two of my favorite things– wine and art. Maria’s projects have been featured in national and international publications.”Frida’s World’,

Maria Brito, Designer

her art orientated interactive iPad and iPhone app for children about the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, was recently selected by Time Out London as one of the best apps for 2011. Maria’s New York based interior design company with a strong focus on contemporary and modern art, art collecting, wine collecting and customized wine storage. She is the one to call to make your house a home.

As many of you know, I have some major hair issues. My hair even opened its own twitter account recently when I was sleeping. Story to come. So hair products are important to me. And IT. Hair Rules daily cleansing cream is not only sulphate but paraben free. It cleanses and conditions in one process, it helps to

Goodbye, unruly hair

detangle hair while cleansing, leaving your hair, shiny, soft and silky. This company actually SPECIALIZES in those of us with unruly hair. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner and partners at another event recently. All really great folks. Any mom, even one without major hair issues, is going to be so happy to receive some really fantastic pampering products from Hair Rules. The cleansing cream retails at $32 for a 16oz bottle and will last for ages. Always check their website for special offers and of course hair styling tips.

Last but not least from this event was this stunning piece by  Judith Jack . Now look. By now you know how insanely picky I am. I never talk about anybody else’s jewelry unless I am REALLY

Come to MAMA!

impressed. This necklace has gorgeous Mother of Pearl on the back of a faceted blue stone which is surrounded by genuine marcasite. I literally saw it and said “WOW”. It has an intricate sterling chain which can either be worn long at 36″or halved to hang at the neckline, 18″.   I’m telling you, it’s Genius.  It retails at $350 and is a perfect gift for any mom and can be found at Nordstrom and Von Maur.

Of course, if none of these really magnificent gifts works for your Mom, or you just really want to overwhelm her with your undying adoration, I am adding new jewelry to my own site every day, so have a peek there as well.

Remember, be good to your Mom, and those who ACT like your Mom.

Much Love!

Sueanne

What to do…when it looks TOO good on you.

September 14, 2010

The media is all over this New York Jets and Ines Sainz locker room controversy.

Although I have  covered the topic, so to speak, in my own way during National Trollop Prevention month in August, and in several cleavage related posts, it is no surprise to me that now that it’s September, Ines didn’t get the memo.  I’ll rinse, repeat, and just put in my two cents. Eyeroll. Is my work never done?

Seems that Ines, who is a drop dead gorgeous Mexican reporter, had a little trouble in the Jets Locker room. She tweeted something to the effect that she was embarrassed or uncomfortable, as rude comments were made to her by the players.  Seems the Jets players behaved like they had never seen a gorgeous woman wearing skin-tight jeans and a revealing top. In other words, they behaved like little boys pretending to be men.

Ines didn’t really complain about it, but her colleague did. The press went wild. Even Sam Champion is tweeting about this.

There are two sides to this story. First, should women expect to be treated professionally if dressed like sluts even while working? Assume they are not standing on a streetcorner. Should men be expected to act like gentlemen when they are at their workplace and everywhere else regardless to what their female colleagues are wearing?

My answer may surprise you.

Here’s the thing. Ines has her own style. And that style is slutty. She’s known for it, the players know about it and guess what?  It works for her. Ines was just doing her job and they should respect that. Since she’s been doing that job for nine years, my guess is that she’s probably good at it.

There is no thin line between sexy and slutty. It’s a big huge mile wide line and Ines chooses to cross it daily. Does she look bad? Nope. She looks hot. Is this a good look for a reporter who wants to be respected? Maybe not. Would I advise people to dress like that? No, not really, but this may be an exception as she has made it her trademark. Frankly, with a few modifications, she’d probably look even better.

That being said, have we forgotten Charo? Some things just work.

Men need to realize that the workplace is not their local strip club and treat women with respect.

What do you think? What would you do… if it looked too good on you?
